Best Time to Visit Ljubljana

Ljubljana sits in a basin below the Alps, with hot summers and cool, wetter winters. The high season runs roughly June to September, the shoulder months are April-May and September-October, and Lake Bled stays busiest — though too cold to swim — outside summer. Here is when to go — and when to think twice.

Best: May – June

Warm, mostly dry days, Lake Bled still fresh after the spring rains, long daylight for day trips to Bohinj and Postojna — all before the peak summer crowds and highest prices.

Second choice: September

Summer heat eases while Lake Bled stays warm enough to swim, and both crowds and prices drop well below the August peak.

Think twice: November

One of the wettest months of the year, with cold rain and grey skies that can make Triple Bridge photos, and day trips to Bled or Postojna, far less rewarding.

Month Weather Crowds Price Notes
January 2 to 9°C Low Low Quiet season, cold and sometimes snowy, some guesthouses and restaurants close, the best hotel rates of the year
February 3 to 11°C Low Low Still quiet and cold, occasional snow on the surrounding hills, a good month for empty streets in the old town
March 6 to 15°C Low Low Days start warming, first spring blossoms, Lake Bled full and lively after winter rain
April 9 to 19°C Medium Medium Mild and mostly dry, wildflowers out, a comfortable month for hiking and day trips before the heat arrives
May 13 to 24°C Medium Medium Warm days, long daylight hours, Lake Bled still fresh and green, one of the best all-round months to visit
June 17 to 29°C High High Summer heat builds, Lake Bled warm enough to swim, high season and prices beginning to rise
July 19 to 32°C High High Hot and dry, the busiest month for day trips to Bled and the Julian Alps, book tours and rafting ahead
August 19 to 32°C High High Peak heat and peak crowds, the Old Bridge diving competition draws visitors, book accommodation well ahead
September 15 to 27°C Medium Medium Heat eases while the river stays swimmable, fewer crowds than August, a favourite month with repeat visitors
October 11 to 20°C Medium Medium Cooling and increasingly wet, vineyards harvesting Žilavka and Blatina grapes, good light for photography
November 6 to 14°C Low Low The wettest month of the year, cold rain and grey skies, some rural roads and trails less pleasant
December 3 to 10°C Low Medium Cold and often wet, Christmas markets add some life to the old town, quiet outside the holiday week
