Getting to Slovenia from Zagreb

Zagreb is one of the busiest gateways into Slovenia, and the border itself is the first thing to get right: Croatia joined Schengen on 1 January 2023, but Slovenia has reinstated temporary checks on this frontier, extended through 21 December 2026, so carry a passport and expect a possible stop.

Once across, the country's small size (20,271 sq km) makes everything a day trip. Driving a rental car, buy the electronic e-vinjeta before joining the motorway — 16 EUR a week in category 2A for a standard car — since there is no toll booth to pay at instead.

Ljubljana is roughly two and a half hours from Zagreb by road or direct bus; Bled and the Postojna cave region add another 30-60 minutes beyond that.
