Things to do in Maribor
Slovenia's second city sits on the Drava river about 130 km east of Ljubljana, roughly a two-hour drive. Its best-known sight is a vine on the facade of a house on the Lent quay: over 400 years old and still producing grapes every autumn, not a preserved relic behind glass.
Maribor works as a base for the eastern wine country, but it is also a stop on the way to Ptuj, Slovenia's oldest town, and Celje, both worth building into a multi-day route rather than a single day trip. Summers run warm, into the low 30s Celsius, and the Lent festival fills the old town each June and July.
Outside festival dates, the riverside core is compact and quiet enough to see on foot in half a day, leaving time to push on toward the Vipava valley or Goriska Brda vineyards further west.
